DESCRIPTION:
The Reality Check Conference is designed to encourage, empower, and educate current and future leaders across Western North Carolina and surrounding areas on the cultural realities experienced by local and national justice leaders. The conference is being held by local leaders who are committed to building a more supportive community around our youth of color and decreasing the inequities, opportunity gaps, and addressing other systemic factors that impact young people’s lives and contribute to cultural divides. Participants will also learn about local initiatives and key players who are active and directly involved in our community.

AUDIENCE:

All are welcome to attend!

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Obtain a greater understanding around the historical trauma of African American men in general and within Asheville and greater Western North Carolina with regards to where we’ve been, our current status, and what potential opportunities await in the future

  • Understand the impact of offensive intention created by privilege and power in a thriving, profitable community; to understand the influence black men have toward youth in both professional, educational, and personal settings

  • To gain a better understanding of ways to engage, maintain, and retain African Americans and People of Color with recognition and understanding (avoid checking the box and “tokenizing” individuals) and with empathy as we move forward to create a better community and professional environment, with tools to work toward success

REGISTRATION:

The registration fee for this conference is $60.00. This fee includes administrative costs, educational materials, breakfast and lunch. If registration is received after June 21, 2019, the total fee will be registration fee + $20.00. The conference is free to all youth enrolled in High School or Middle School.

MSTMT has a pay-up-front policy for this conference. The only exceptions will be for pre-approved programs where an individual payment plan is appropriate. Registrations received without accompanying payment will not be processed and participants who have not paid the course fee will not be admitted into the program. No refunds will be given for cancellations. All cancellations must be made in writing (fax, mail, or email). Substitutes can be accommodated in advance of the program.
